At his home in North Stamford, artist James Knowles is busy working on an aluminum sculpture for the marquee of his family's hotel in New York City. Knowles already created the base of the structure -- a set of aluminum pipes melded together in a unique shape -- and is now attaching separate pieces of aluminum. After placing the first couple pieces, Knowles said he hadn't planned where to put them or what the final outcome will look like. But, he said, it looked "rigid," and that's good. "They don't have a specific location in advance," he said. "But it comes up and it comes alive." Hustling back and forth from the pile of aluminum to the structure, Knowles continued placing aluminum pieces that he constructed earlier onto the base. They came in all different shapes and sizes, with some looking like an accordion.

Upon completion, Knowles stepped back for a moment to look at his masterpiece. "Come on, that's beautiful," he said. "Look at the complexity of it." The 69-year-old has been creating art for most of his career, while also running the Hotel Roger Smith on 47th Street at Lexington Avenue in New York City. He has joined his two interests together, turning the historic hotel into a showplace and meeting place for artists. "It's known in the city," he said. "It's a funky little hotel." On a recent day, Knowles was cutting elm trees in the backyard of his High Ridge Road home, which sits on nine acres of land. The wood from the trunks will not go to waste, as he uses a chainsaw to carve them into artwork. Knowles left the woods to discuss his family's history in Stamford and the chain of hotels they once owned. Heading toward an old barn which he uses as a workshop, Knowles said he and his wife purchased their home in the 1970s and raised a family there.

His father-in-law once owned a huge piece of property next door, stretching back to Trinity Pass, and also owned a hotel chain. He started with the Hotel Roger Smith in Stamford in 1929, then gradually bought out hotels in New York, until eventually acquiring 17 of them. Knowles graduated from Yale University and received a master's degree in fine art from the University of Pennsylvania, with the intention of being an artist. For many years, he focused on his sculptures, creating some for local churches, schools and businessmen. In 1987, his father-in-law died and Knowles took over the last remaining Hotel Roger Smith in Manhattan. The place was once called the Hotel Winthrop before being purchased by the Roger Smith Corp. in 1938, with plans to fill it with tourists for the 1939 World's Fair. These days, Knowles said the hotel -- which has about 130 rooms -- is booked every night and plays a part in the city's arts scene. He said he travels to the hotel almost every day and also works on his own artwork at home. Looking at a giant bronze bust sitting in the yard, he said the subject was a Jewish philanthropist who gave his money to Harvard Medical School. He said he made a statue for the man and one for himself, adding, "I don't think he particularly liked it."

Knowles showed several other pieces on the lawn before heading into his self-proclaimed "messy" workspace. Inside, chainsaws, hammers and other tools are strewn everywhere and various pieces of artwork can be found lying around. Picking up some of his work, Knowles said, "This stuff here is so lightweight that it intrigues me. They're aluminum tubes that we shape together." Sitting on a chair in the corner, he grabbed some small clay sculptures that he molded. Although the faces seem a little distorted, he said they really look like the subjects. Some small bronze sculptures were located overhead and on shelving around the barn. Knowles said he gets random visits to the workshop, sometimes by people who are driving by and notice his artwork on the lawn. He said he had one the day before.

Heading back outside, Knowles pointed out three replicas of pieces that are on display in public places. One is a giant bronze cross that's at Christ Church in Greenwich. The others are plaster pieces at the New Canaan Country Day School and New Canaan Presbyterian Church. Then, like a mad scientist, Knowles began working on the piece that will go over the marquee. He compared it to a piece of music, possibly by Mozart. Aside from the piece going on the marquee, Knowles said he usually doesn't show his own work at the hotel. "My stuff is around, but I'm not showing it much," he said. "I'm showing other people's stuff."

Hong Kong-based hotel operator Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts and Mumbai-based Phoenix MillsBSE -2.88 % have 'mutually' agreed to terminate the management contract of the latter's five-star hotel in Mumbai, just nine months after the hotel became operational. "Shangri-La International Hotel Management and Pallazzio Hotels and Leisure have mutually decided to end their relationship and Shangri-La will withdraw from the management of the Shangri-La Hotel, Mumbai," a spokesperson for Shangri-La said in response to an email query by ET. Pallazzio Hotels is a subsidiary of Phoenix Mills, which owns the 40-storeyed luxury hotel in the Phoenix Mills compound in Lower Parel, Mumbai.

Shangri-La will withdraw from the management of the hotel on September 6. "The hotel will be handed over to the owning company on September 6 and will no longer be part of Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts," the spokesperson said. Shishir Shrivastava, joint managing director and group chief executive officer of Phoenix Mills, confirmed the development. Both Pallazzio and Shangri-La, however, declined to comment on the reason behind the termination of the 20-year contract within nine months. The mutual decision, however, means there will be no penalties involved. "Reasons are confidential and as of now, officially, both the parties have mutually agreed to terminate the contract," Shrivastava said. Pallazzio has now finalised a new operator to manage the 390-room hotel. "We have narrowed down on the new operator we want to work with and as soon as we finalise, we will announce it," he said.

At present, 223 of the hotel's 390 rooms are operational. The remaining will be made operational in phases. The company has invested over Rs 1,000 crore on the hotel project. "The property will continue to operate as an uber-luxury hotel with several enhancements, new banquet facilities and further the signature restaurant Mekong and Libai Bar will launch as planned by mid-September," Shrivastava said. Phoenix Mills had faced several issues while obtaining environmental clearance for the project, as the construction work of the hotel had commenced before obtaining the mandatory clearances from the State Environment Impact Assessment authority, the three-member committee set up by the Ministry of Environment and Forests to scrutinise and grant clearance to all major construction projects.

When travelers book a hotel room, they can usually count on finding many of the conveniences of home, from clean bedding to tiny shampoos. But for routines that go beyond sleeping and grooming, a hotel room may fall short. These hotel-room hacks will help you transform your sleeping space into a place to keep off extra weight, keep up with your inbox, or keep your kids safe and entertained. You don't need rows of elliptical machines or even a lot of space to keep up your fitness routine on the road. While you probably shouldn't attempt pull-ups on the doorframe or swing around a jump rope, the average hotel room affords plenty of space to do squats, pushups, jumping jacks, crunches, lunges and triceps dips. If your normal workout involves weight training, substitute barbells with resistance bands, which are lightweight and portable enough to fit into any carry-on. You can even use the luggage itself as weight resistance (just don't overdo it--you still have to get it into the overhead bin on the way home).

For a more structured workout, pop a workout DVD into the room's DVD player or your laptop, or find free videos on sites like YouTube and BodyRock, many requiring no equipment except your own body weight. Many hotels have business centers that can provide the conveniences of the office and a distraction-free place to work. But if a room is all you have, then a reliable Internet connection is priority number one.
Free Wi-Fi is an increasingly common hotel amenity, but some hotels still charge by the hour and even by the device. Frequent business travelers should invest in a Wi-Fi base station like the Apple AirPort Express, which turns a single wired Internet connection into a Wi-Fi hot spot, so you can connect all your devices without extra charges.

Using Skype for business calls can help you avoid racking up cell phone minutes or room-phone charges. For hands-free calls, get a Bluetooth headset and Bluetooth adaptor for your laptop if it doesn't already have one. Groups of coworkers on the road should consider a portable, wireless speaker like Jambox, which can connect to your phone via Bluetooth so you can hold conference calls while ensuring everyone in the room can hear clearly. Some hotels are already equipped with child-friendly gear like cribs and outlet covers -- just call ahead and they'll set everything up before your arrival. For childproofing on the fly, remember: a single roll of masking or duct tape goes a long way. Use it to cover outlets, tape washcloths to sharp corners and keep drawers from closing on curious fingers.

These additional steps will help create a kid-friendly space: remove the plastic bags from trash cans; remove table cloths that can be pulled down; make sure windows are securely locked with furniture moved away; tie up loose cords, like on window blinds, so they're out of reach; unplug electrical devices like hairdryers and coffee pots and keep them in a locked or out-of-reach drawer; check all surfaces for small objects that can be choked on; put away potentially hazardous products like shampoo and mouthwash; and lock balcony doors. Of course, none of these tips will keep away another threat to families: boredom. If bad weather has you stuck indoors, have the kids build a pillow fort, write postcards to friends back home, or hold a treasure hunt with convenience-store finds like candy and stickers hidden around the room.

American entrepreneur Michael van Cleef Ault and BK Modi-led Spice Global are in talks to launch boutique hotels and a luxury concierge firm under Pangaea, an ultra-luxury nightclub brand.Ault, whose Pangaea Singapore is one of the most profitable super luxury nightclubs in the world, says the future of his business is in India. And the present of his business are rich Indians - he owes his success to rich Indians' urge to splurge come rain or slowdown as seen in their extravagant spending at the tables of his club in Singapore.

"We get a lot of rich Koreans, Chinese, Swiss bankers, Australians and Americans at Pangaea Singapore, but I must say that the largest, most consistent, loyal and biggest spenders have been Indian guests and most of them are from Delhi and Mumbai," Ault, 50, tells ET. He is in Delhi to check out Pangaea's first nightclub in the country at Ashok Hotel in the capital. The second one will soon come up in Mumbai. Spice Global, which is the major investor in the venture, is also contemplating partnering Ault to open Pangaea nightclubs in international locations such as Dubai and Istanbul. But Ault is most bullish on India. He says the kind of money that flows out of pockets of his Indian guests often amazes him. "You have to look at them twice to believe it," he says.

"They are mostly billionaires with big businesses and tremendous spending power, and book the centre of the room every night," he says. "These guests frequent the club more than I do!" And unlike most global airlines, Ault says Indian guests are well behaved. "They do not get into fights and are polite to our staff," he says. The average per head spend at Pangaea is anywhere from $400 to $1,000 (about 24,000-60,000), much higher than the top nightclubs in Las Vegas where a guest usually spends a $50-100, says Ault, claiming his club in Singapore is the most profitable one in the world with business of $21 million in the first year of operations.

"The kind of business we are doing within the 4,000 sqft space is phenomenally higher than other top clubs in the world, including the ones in Las Vegas which are 30,000 sqft big," he says. There have been times like the F1 race in Singapore, when Pangaea has done business worth $1 million in just one week. And Ault is firm on replicating the success in India. "I believe the brand is already very popular here as the top jet Indians have already been to our clubs in Miami, New York, London," he says.

The Grand Strand stretches along the Atlantic Coast for more than 60 miles.  White sandy beaches, pristine Oceanside communities, and plenty of things to do make the Grand Strand a haven for visitors searching for the perfect beach destination.  Divided into six main areas, you can choose which locale suits your vacation style.  Ready to learn more about South Carolina’s Grand Strand?  Read on.  Myrtle Beach is the heart of the Grand Strand.   With fun family beaches, over 100 championship golf courses, tennis courts, outlet malls, specialty shops, live musical theatre, nightclubs and a wealth of family attractions, it is the place to be for convenient access to all Myrtle Beach activities.  Plus, there are over 100 lodging options to choose from, including plenty of oceanfront resorts.

For a more laidback vacation, stay in North Myrtle Beach.  The quaint, historic town is made up of communities like Windy Hill, Crescent Beach, Ocean Drive and Cherry Grove.  Fishing, boating and waterfront dining are highlights of North Myrtle Beach, as are attractions like Barefoot Landing.  North Myrtle Beach has wide, sandy beaches that can be a bit less crowded than the ones located in Myrtle Beach. Family-friendly and easy-going, staying in Surfside lets you enjoy part of the Grand Strand that is less developed.  You won’t see high-rise hotels here, although there are plenty of oceanfront beach houses, condos and hotels.  Oceanfront restaurants and piers, as well as less crowded beaches, make a visit to Surfside pleasant and pleasing to Grand Strand vacationers.

The historic fishing village of Murrell’s Inlet is known as the “Seafood capital of South Carolina” because of the fresh seafood drawn from its waters and served at the many restaurants lining the waterfront.  You’ll want to head to the Marsh Walk to enjoy some of the seafood specialties, as well as enjoy breathtaking views of the waterfront.  Many outdoor activities are available in Murrell’s Inlet including deep sea fishing charters, boat tours, individual boat rentals, scuba diving, kayaking, parasailing and jet skiing.  One of the best attractions in the area is Brookgreen Gardens, as beautiful sculpture and garden park highlighting the beauty of the Carolinas.

Named after the 18th century Litchfield Plantation, Litchfield Beach has a quaint, modern atmosphere.  Lovely mossy oak tree lined settings surround eclectic shopping and dining opportunities, while miles of wide sandy beaches and world-class golf courses add to the things to do in picturesque Litchfield.  Only one oceanfront hotel is available – the Oceanfront Litchfield Inn – but a variety of beach houses and condos can be rented.

One of the oldest resort areas on the east coast, Pawley’s Island has a distinct southern feel.  Four miles of sandy beaches and a relaxed atmosphere make this laidback island a perfect retreat.  Village-style shops, wonderful golf courses and top-notch dining create an undeniable appeal for visitors.

Garden City Beach:  Garden City offers the best of both worlds as visitors can enjoy quiet solitude or happening hot spots.  With access to both the ocean and the inlet, the area is great for fishing, crabbing and water sports.  Beach houses and condos are the norm in Garden City.  A new Creekwalk spans the salt march and is a pleasant place to take in the sights of the area.
