Eating sand can greatly erode tooth enamel, causing decay, cavities, sensitivity, discoloration, and pain. This is because of the abrasiveness of the sand.

1. We took our 8 month old to the beach yesterday, she LOVED it. Splashed in the water, crawled everywhere, played etc..But she managed to sneak some sand into her mouth (not sure how much) but a couple handfuls over all maybe? I kept saying "no" and taking her hand away but you know how quick they are! Anyway, today she's got diarrhea. She has had diarrhea before due to teething a few months ago and poo sample came back clear, no parasite etc at that time. Anyway, I have googled 'eating sand' but can't seem to find anything that mentions diarrhea afterwards? Any thoughts? Just worried that she might have picked up some sort of sand parasite or am I over worrying at this point? Could still be teeth related as she's got one just about to cut through..
Any opinions on this sand stuff? Oh yeah, no more beach for her until she stops wanting to eat it...
2. My 16 mth old eats sand when he plays in his sandpit. I tell him no but he just laughs !!!
Anyway the sand seems to cause no ill effect it just passes through when he has a bowel movement. Must be very scratchy though !3. In my scientific opinion (lol) i don't think it's a parasite and is more likely teeth. We have a beach house, and DD eats sand all the time whenever I turn my back for 2 seconds. She tends to get a bit of a belly ache, and has the runs if she has also managed to drink a bit of sea water.
